Frequently Asked Questions

What are the eligibility requirements?

U.S. Citizenship: For most jobs, you do not need to be a citizen. All applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and will be required to submit proof of eligibility.

Residency: Requirements vary by job although the majority of jobs require that you live in New York City.

Past Convictions: You can still get a job at DANY if you were convicted of a crime. Unfair discrimination against persons previously convicted of one or more criminal offenses is prohibited unless there is a direct relationship between the offense(s) and the employment sought, and the granting of the employment would involve an unreasonable risk to property or the safety or welfare of specific individuals or the general public.

Background Check: If you are selected for employment with DANY, you will be investigated to confirm you are qualified for the position. You will be asked to provide a detailed history of your employment, education, residences, etc. Any false statements made during the investigation can disqualify you from employment or bar you from any future employment with DANY or with the City of New York. If you provide false information you will also be subject to criminal prosecution. Fingerprinting is required for all applicants selected for employment. If you are selected for employment you will also be responsible for paying fingerprinting fees, payroll processing fees, and/or the oath of office fee.

How do I know if a job is still open?

All opportunities listed on our website are positions for which we are actively recruiting. We do not have a general email address for you to submit a resume to, you must apply directly to a specific position to be considered. 

How do I submit an application?

Each posting for a position at the New York County District Attorney’s Office will indicate the required application materials. Application requirements for a specific job will be outlined in the “How to Apply” section of the posting. To be considered for any position at this office, you must apply online to one of our current Job Openings. 

What materials are required to apply?

For an application to be considered complete, candidates must submit the following:

  • A resume,
  • A cover letter, and
  • The name and contact information for three professional references, as well as your relationship to them (e.g. former supervisor, previous employer, etc.).

Certain positions may require additional materials (i.e. unofficial transcript or a writing sample), depending on the education or experience outlined in the job posting. 

NOTE: Incomplete applications will not be considered. 

To whom should I address my cover letter?

Various bureau administrators review submitted applications, please address all cover letters “To Whom It May Concern.”

Who should I call to follow up on an application?

Our Human Resources Department can confirm receipt of an application, but cannot provide you a status update on your application or on the hiring process.

Does the Office allow for Skype or Phone Interviews?

No, the Office will only schedule in-person interviews. 

When will you contact my references?

Someone from our Office will reach out to your references:

  • Only if they are considering making you an offer, and 
  • Only after a first-round interview.

After I am interviewed, may I call or write the interviewers for feedback?

Our interviewers do not discuss hiring decisions with applicants.
