Legislative Affairs
The Legislative Affairs Unit works as a legislative advocate on behalf of the People of the State of New York. The Unit researches and analyzes proposed State legislation for its potential impact on the New York County DA's Office and the entire criminal justice system.
The Unit tracks bills from their introduction through the State legislative system, to final signing by the Governor. Working as a member of the New York State District Attorneys Association, the Legislative Affairs Unit writes position papers and helps develop legislative policy for the 62 District Attorney Offices throughout the State.
The Unit also organizes the work of the New York State Law Enforcement Council, a statewide law enforcement organization. Each year the Law Enforcement Council publishes their legislative priorities, which are distributed to all the members of the State Assembly, the State Senate and the Governor's Office in Albany. Recent legislative priorities have included: strengthening child abuse laws, strengthening money laundering laws, redefining sex offenses, and the creation of a statute to address stalking.
