DA VANCE: AFTER-SCHOOL BASKETBALL COACH CHARGED WITH SEXUALLY ABUSING TWO CHILDREN

Parents of Children Who Have Had Contact with Defendant Urged to Call DA's Office's Child Abuse Hotline: 212-335-4308

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., today announced the indictment of CHANNING PARKER, 22, for sexually abusing two 8-year-old children while he was employed as an after-school basketball coach. The defendant is charged in a New York State Supreme Court indictment with Predatory Sexual Assault Against a Child, Criminal Sexual Act and Sexual Abuse, both in the First Degree, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.[1]

“As demonstrated by the allegations in this case, sexual predators are often repeat offenders,” said District Attorney Vance. “Just one day after Channing Parker’s arrest, another victim came forward. We want to make sure that any other potential victims are promptly identified and matched with the resources and help they need so that they do not bear this burden alone. For parents of children who may have had contact with this defendant, I urge you to contact my Office’s Child Abuse Unit by calling (212) 335-4308. Help and counseling are available."

According to documents filed in court and statements made on the record in court, beginning in January 2015, PARKER was employed by Kids Creative, a nonprofit that organizes after-school programs at various New York City schools. Beginning in November 2016, Parker worked as an after-school basketball coach at the IDEAL School, located on West 91st Street on the Upper West Side.

On March 10, 2017, at approximately 2:00 pm, PARKER was coaching students in the IDEAL school’s gym. During that time, he took an 8-year-old girl into a single-occupancy bathroom and sexually assaulted her. The child told her mother about the incident, her mother reported it to the school, and then the school reported it to police. The defendant was arrested the following day.

Following the defendant’s arrest, the IDEAL school notified parents about the incident. The next day, another 8-year-old student disclosed that on March 8, 2017, PARKER took her into the same single-occupancy bathroom and sexually assaulted her.

Assistant District Attorney Elizabeth Clerkin is handling the prosecution of the case, under the supervision of Assistant District Attorney Nicole Blumberg, Chief of the Child Abuse Unit, Executive Assistant District Attorney Audrey Moore, Chief of the Special Victims Bureau, Executive Assistant District Attorney John Irwin, Chief of the Trial Division.

District Attorney Vance thanked the NYPD and the Manhattan Child Advocacy Center for their assistance with the investigation.

[1] The charges contained in the indictment are merely allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. All factual recitations are derived from documents filed in court and statements made on the record in court.
