DA VANCE: DAVON PINKSTON SENTENCED TO 60 ½ YEARS TO LIFE IN PRISON FOR ROLE IN VIOLENT GANG TURF WAR IN HARLEM

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., today announced the sentencing of DAVON PINKSTON, 23, to 60 ½ years to life in state prison for his role in a bitter and violent gang turf war in West Harlem. On August 20, 2015, the defendant was convicted in New York State Supreme Court of multiple felonies, including Conspiracy in the First and Third Degrees, Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, Assault in the First Degree, Attempted Assault in the First Degree, Attempted Gang Assault in the First Degree, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree. Two co-defendants, KEITH GOODMAN, 33, and ALEJANDRO RIVERA, 23, were also convicted at the same trial of Conspiracy and other felony charges. A fourth co-defendant JAVANN GARNES, 23, pleaded guilty to Conspiracy in the Second Degree.

“Last year, my Office and our partners in the NYPD dismantled three violent street gangs which, through years of bloody feuds, collectively had a devastating impact on public safety in West Harlem,” said District Attorney Vance. “The resolution of 84 of the more than 100 cases from the Manhattanville and Grant Houses indictments reaffirms our commitment to ensuring that those who inflict violence upon our communities will face appropriate criminal consequences, including significant prison time for the most serious offenses.”

As proven at trial, PINKSTON, as a member of the street gang “Money Avenue,” sought to assert control over areas of West Harlem by engaging in acts of retaliatory gun violence and physical assaults, as well as other threats of violence, including shootings, stabbings, slashings, assaults, gang assaults, robberies, and firearms possession. PINKSTON was directly responsible for at least three shootings, either as the shooter or an accomplice. The case was the result of a 2014 indictment which charged 103 members of “Money Avenue,” their affiliated gang “Make it Happen Boys,” and rival gang “3 Staccs.” To date, 84 defendants have been convicted for their roles in the conspiracy.

Assistant District Attorneys Andrew Warshawer and Jon Veiga, Deputy Chief of the Violent Criminal Enterprises Unit, handled the prosecution of the case under the supervision of Assistant District Attorney Christopher Ryan, Chief of the Violent Criminal Enterprises Unit, and Executive Assistant District Attorney John Irwin, Chief of the Trial Division.

District Attorney Vance thanked members of the NYPD’s Gang Division, Intelligence Division, Community Affairs Bureau, the 26th Precinct, the 28th Precinct, and PSA6 for their assistance with the case.
