DA VANCE: FRANCISCO FLORES SENTENCED TO 8 YEARS IN STATE PRISON FOR ROBBING 92-YEAR-OLD MAN IN CHELSEA

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., today announced the sentencing of FRANCISCO FLORES, 42, to 8 years in state prison and 5 years of post-release supervision for violently robbing a 92-year-old man in 2013. On September 26, 2014, FLORES pleaded guilty in New York State Supreme Court to Robbery in the Second Degree.

“Francisco Flores viciously attacked an elderly man and robbed him of one of his most valued possessions—a beloved Bible,” said District Attorney Vance. “While the victim showed extreme resilience throughout the investigation and prosecution of this case, the elderly community is, unfortunately, especially vulnerable to a wide array of crimes, ranging from financial scams to violence and abuse. I urge anyone who believes they may be or know a victim of elder abuse to call my Office’s Elder Abuse Hotline at 212-335-9007.”

According to the defendant’s guilty plea and statements made on the record in court, at approximately 11:30 p.m. on June 10, 2013, FLORES attacked a 92-year-old man, pushing him to the ground on West 18th Street near 8th Avenue. The defendant then stole the victim’s bag, containing his glasses and a Bible, and fled the scene. The victim was hospitalized for three weeks following the attack, undergoing surgery for a broken hip.

A neighboring restaurant’s surveillance cameras captured the incident on video, which the NYPD released to the media. A tip to the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers hotline revealed that FLORES was the attacker. He was later found and placed under arrest at a Brooklyn hospital.

Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Kirkland and former Assistant District Attorney Gregory Scally prosecuted the case, under the supervision of Assistant District Attorney Warren Murray, Chief of Trial Bureau 50, and Executive Assistant District Attorney John Irwin, Chief of the Trial Division.

District Attorney Vance also thanked the members and the Detective Squad of the NYPD's 10th Precinct, including Detective Frank Geosits.
