Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr., today announced the indictment of MIGUEL URENA, 30, for shooting at a 47-year-old man in a crowded Harlem subway station in May 2024. URENA is charged in a New York State Supreme Court indictment with one count each of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, Attempted Assault in the First Degree and Reckless Endangerment in the First Degree. He is additionally charged with two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree. [1] 

“As aleged, Miguel Urena intentionally fired a gun in the direction of a man in a crowded subway station, recklessly disregarding the risk to his fellow New Yorkers,” said District Attorney Bragg. “Although nobody was hit, several individuals had to jump out of the way for safety. The alleged conduct is unacceptable, and we will continue to prosecute those who commit acts of violence in our transit system.”  

According to court documents and statements made on the record in court, on May 11, 2024, URENA entered the 135th Street station, near West 135th and Lenox Avenue, and started pacing past a man, who was asking people for money by an emergency exit gate. At approximately 5:20 p.m., URENA pulled out a firearm and, unprovoked, shot towards the man, missing him. Hearing the shot, several straphangers screamed and ran away to avoid being struck.   

URENA fled the station and was arrested approximately 45 minutes later. While arresting URENA, officers recovered a loaded firearm from his waistband.

D.A. Bragg thanked the NYPD, particularly Officer Tyler Perez, Officer Michael Ryan, Officer Muzli Kastrati and Sergeant Bryan Kassebuam of Transit District 3. He also thanked Detective Rafael Aquino and Officer Deandre Dosey of Housing PSA 6.
