D.A. Bragg Announces Murder Indictment Of Luis Marquez For Fatally Stabbing Ex-Girlfriend

November 25, 2025

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr., today announced the indictment of LUIS MARQUEZ, 41, for allegedly murdering 47-year-old Carmen Lopez, his ex-girlfriend, by stabbing her more than 20 times throughout her body in November 2025. MARQUEZ is charged in a New York State Supreme Court indictment with one count of Murder in the Second Degree.[1]

“As alleged, Carmen Lopez’s life was brutally taken by her ex-boyfriend in a horrific act of intimate-partner violence,” said District Attorney Bragg. “Ambushed after a night out with friends, Ms. Lopez was left to die alone on the floor in her own apartment building. My heart is with Ms. Lopez’s loved ones as they grieve her immense loss.

“Unfortunately, this is not an isolated occurrence. Nationwide, 50% of female homicides are committed by an intimate partner. Early intervention is key. Our Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Bureau has trauma-informed, expert staff dedicated to supporting survivors. Please call us at 212-335-9373.”

As alleged in court documents and statements made on the record in court, MARQUEZ dated Ms. Lopez on-and-off for several years. On the night of Saturday, November 9, 2025, MARQUEZ stalked Ms. Lopez while she was at a club with her friends. After briefly speaking with her, MARQUEZ left and went to Ms. Lopez’s Harlem apartment building where he waited in the stairwell for more than two hours for her to return home. When Ms. Lopez returned at approximately 4 a.m. on Sunday morning, MARQUEZ lunged at her as she exited the elevator, pinned her to the ground, and repeatedly stabbed her in her stomach, throat, and chest at least 20 times. Afterward, MARQUEZ returned to his apartment building. Ms. Lopez’s body was discovered approximately 15 minutes after she was killed. MARQUEZ was arrested on November 11, 2025.

Assistant D.A.s Jonathon Junig (Chief of the Human Trafficking Unit) and Tom Kendris (Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Bureau) are handling the prosecution of this case under the supervision of Executive Assistant D.A. Justin McNabney (Chief of the Special Victims Division) with the assistance of Investigative Analyst Jaden Bharara, Senior Investigative Analyst Desiree Marks, and members of the Office’s Survivors Services Bureau.

D.A. Bragg thanked the NYPD’s 26th Precinct Detective Squad, in particular Detective Vincent Johnson.
