Watch: D.A. Bragg, Senator Hoylman-Sigal, and Assemblymember Lee Announced Hate Crimes Legislation
D.A. Bragg Delivers Remarks Introducing New “Hate Crimes Modernization Act”
Assault can be charged as a hate crime, but gang assault cannot. So, if one person beats up another person because of the victim’s race, that assault can be charged as a hate crime. But, inexplicably, if a group of people beats someone up because of their race, that gang assault (as the law calls it) cannot be charged as a hate crime. That needs to change.
D.A. Bragg Announces Prison Sentence of Pedro-Vinent Barcia For Fatal Domestic Violence Stabbing
“Today Pedro Vincent-Barcia finally faced accountability for his violent and gruesome stabbing of his girlfriend inside a store in East Harlem,” said District Attorney Bragg. “What happened to Bernice Rosado is extremely tragic, but I hope this sentence brings her loved ones a sense of justice to help them on their journey towards healing.”
D.A. Bragg Announces Hate Crime Indictment of Man For Vandalizing Three Upper East Side Synagogues in 48 Hours
“As alleged, Lenny De La Rosa defaced three synagogues and an ambulance in a series of antisemitic acts,” said District Attorney Bragg. “Synagogues are sacred places where everyone should be able to practice their faith safely. We will not allow our houses of worship to be violated by hateful acts and we do not tolerate bias and antisemitism.”
D.A. Bragg Creates “Special Victims Division Advisory Council” To Gain External Stakeholders’ Perspectives On Office Practice
“We created the Special Victims Division Advisory Council to dig into what’s working, what isn’t working, and solicit feedback from external stakeholders on an ongoing basis,” said District Attorney Bragg. “Strengthening trust with community partners and reducing barriers to services for survivors lead to more reporting and increased participation in the criminal justice process. Through this ongoing collaboration, we hope to share resources, learn from each other, and continue to improve our practice. Thank you to all of the members of the Advisory Council for their time, commitment, and expertise, and particularly our co-chairs Maria Lizardo and Judy Kluger for their leadership.”
