Landlords who rent to illicit marijuana retailers are facing new legal action from the city, and hundreds of smoke shops suspected of selling cannabis without a license will be threatened with eviction by Manhattan’s top prosecutor, officials said today.

New York City is escalating its crackdown on illegal marijuana stores, seeking to force landlords to evict the unlicensed shops that have proliferated across the city as state-sanctioned weed retailers begin operating.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg warned hundreds of illegal pot joints Tuesday that he’s ready to snuff them out with eviction notices.

“For nearly two years, we’ve seen a proliferation of storefronts across Manhattan selling unlicensed, unregulated, and untaxed cannabis products. It’s time for the operation of unlicensed cannabis dispensaries to end,” said District Attorney Bragg. “Just as we don’t allow endless unlicensed bars and liquor stores to open on every corner, we cannot allow that for cannabis. It’s not safe to sell products that aren’t properly inspected and regulated for dosage, purity, and contaminants. And it certainly isn’t fair to competing businesses.”

"Gun violence is unacceptable in any form, but the alleged actions of these defendants put the lives of a father, his young child and an NYPD officer serving our city at risk,” said District Attorney Bragg. “Everyone deserves to enjoy the scenic and historic views of the Upper West Side and Riverside Park safely and we will not tolerate this type of violence anywhere in Manhattan.”
