D.A. Bragg Announces Indictment Of Angel Alvarado For Repeatedly Stabbing Sleeping Train Passenger

February 24, 2025

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr., today announced the indictment of ANGEL ALVARADO, 54, for repeatedly stabbing a train passenger and dragging him through moving subway cars. ALVARADO is charged in a New York State Supreme court indictment with one count of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree; one count of Attempted Assault in the First Degree; one count of Assault in the Second Degree; and three counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree. “As alleged, this was a brutal attack against a completely defenseless and helpless victim, and I hope he recovers quickly from his injuries,” said District Attorney Bragg. “I know how scary this type of random violence against strangers is, and I want the public to know that we are going to continue to prosecute these cases and use every tool available to keep transit riders safe.”

According to court documents and statements made on the record, on January 28 at approximately 4:25 a.m. ALVARADO and the 46-year-old male victim were sitting across from each other on a southbound 2 train. ALVARADO approached the victim, who was sleeping, and began repeatedly stabbing him with a sharp object. ALVARADO then dragged him through the door of the moving train in between two cars.

When the train pulled into the West 96th Street station, passengers alerted the MTA conductor and the train stopped. Police eventually arrested ALVARADO on the platform.

The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment to stab wounds on his neck, head, back, shoulder and arm.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant D.A. Abigail Balfour, under the supervision of David Hammer (Chief of Trial Bureau 70) and Executive Assistant D.A. Lisa DelPizzo (Chief of the Trial Division). TPA Jasmine Berger is also assisting with the case.

D.A. Bragg thanked Officer Marvel Kingston and Detective John Williams of the NYPD.
