Rivera is Charged with Four Counts of Attempted Murder

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr., today announced the indictment of EDWIN RIVERA, 34, for shooting at New York City Police Department personnel who were executing a search warrant on two occasions, and striking a detective in the shoulder. RIVERA is charged in a New York State Supreme Court indictment with two counts of Attempted Murder in the First Degree; two counts of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree; two counts of Attempted Assault in the First Degree; one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree; and two counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree. “We have absolutely no tolerance for any conduct that harms police officers, and the charges in this indictment reflect the seriousness with which we are treating this incident,” said District Attorney Bragg. “I want to thank the members of the NYPD who put on their uniforms every day to selflessly protect New Yorkers. Their jobs are incredibly dangerous, and I hope the detective who was shot will continue to recover from his injuries. I thank him, and everyone else on the scene that day, for their bravery and commitment to keeping everyone safe.”

“The shooting of a uniformed police officer is an attack on our entire city,” said NYPD Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch. “This indictment serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that NYPD police officers face every day while working to keep New York City safe. As their noble work continues, we remain committed to closely collaborating with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office to ensure that those who endanger the security of New Yorkers are held fully accountable.”

According to court documents and statements made on the record, at approximately 5:04 a.m. on February 18, 2025, police executed a search warrant on a Lower East Side apartment. RIVERA fired multiple rounds when police entered. No one was struck and the NYPD left the building.

RIVERA then threw a bag of drugs through his window onto the street.

For approximately three hours, police spoke to RIVERA directly to negotiate his surrender.

At approximately 8:18 a.m., police re-entered the apartment and RIVERA fired at them again, hitting a detective in the shoulder. Another officer returned fire and RIVERA was struck in his leg and torso. He was subsequently placed under the arrest.

The detective was transported to Bellevue Hospital and released later that day.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant D.A.s Alfred Peterson, Elizabeth Murphy and Valeriia Golubchik, under the supervision Executive Assistant D.A. Lisa DelPizzo (Chief of the Trial Division). Trial Preparation Assistant George Cole is also assisting with the case.

D.A. Bragg thanked the members of the NYPD.
