Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr., today announced the indictment of KEVIN YOUNG, 39, for fatally stabbing 55-year-old Monte McEvilley, his neighbor, in a Midtown building in July 2024. YOUNG is charged in a New York State Supreme Court indictment with one count of Manslaughter in the First Degree. [1]
“As alleged, Kevin Young brutally stabbed Monte McEvilley, his neighbor, who was completely unarmed,” said District Attorney Bragg. “This alleged conduct senselessly took Mr. McEvilley’s life, and my thoughts are with his loved ones as they continue to grieve their loss. My office will continue to hold those accountable who threaten the safety of fellow Manhattanites.”
According to court documents and statements made on the record in court, YOUNG lived in the apartment above Mr. McEvilley, in a building used for supportive housing, near West 43rd Street and 8th Avenue. On July 9, 2024, at approximately 12:53 a.m., Mr. McEvilley’s bathroom ceiling was leaking. Attempting to address the leak, Mr. McEvilley went upstairs to YOUNG’s apartment and knocked on the door.
A few minutes later, YOUNG answered the door and Mr. McEvilley complained to him about the leak. As YOUNG attempted to close the door, Mr. McEvilley pushed back against the door. YOUNG pulled out a knife and stabbed Mr. McEvilley once in the chest, causing him to fall to the ground and wounding his heart. He was eventually transported to the hospital, but never regained consciousness.
YOUNG was arrested at the scene.
Assistant D.A.s Dafna Yoran (Senior Trial Counsel) and Meral Kerim are handling the prosecution of this case, under the supervision of Executive D.A. Lisa DelPizzo (Chief of the Trial Division). Investigative Analyst Mihir Sardesai (Trial Bureau 70) is providing valuable assistance in the case.
D.A. Bragg thanked the NYPD, particularly Detective Corinna Peraza (Midtown South Precinct Detective Squad) and the other members of the Midtown South Precinct, and Officer Andrew Yoli (Patrol Borough Manhattan South).
