Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr., today announced the indictment of AMAD EDWARDS, 27, for stabbing a 52-year-old man in an unprovoked attack at the 96th Street and Lexington Avenue station on the Upper East Side in August 2024. EDWARDS is charged in a New York State Supreme Court indictment with one count each of Attempted Assault in the First Degree and Assault in the Second Degree. [1] EDWARDS was arraigned in Supreme Court on September 16, 2024.
“As alleged, Amad Edwards viciously stabbed a stranger on a subway platform in the early morning hours,” said District Attorney Bragg. “In Manhattan, we will continue to hold people accountable who commit harmful and illegal conduct in our stations and on our subways. I wish the victim a speedy recovery.”
According to court documents and statements made on the record in court, on August 20, 2024, at approximately 3:30 a.m., the 52-year-old man was standing on the northbound 6 train platform at the 96th Street and Lexington Avenue station. EDWARDS approached the man from behind and, unprovoked, stabbed him in the neck. As the man went to report the incident to an MTA employee at the station’s booth, EDWARDS fled the station. The man was eventually taken to the hospital where he received stitches.
EDWARDS was arrested the following day at the 125th Street and Lexington Avenue station, after officers recognized him from a wanted flyer.
