D.A. Bragg Announces Indictment Of Man For Throwing Girlfriend Into Oncoming Train In Lower Manhattan

April 11, 2024

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr. today announced the indictment of CHRISTIAN VALDEZ, 35, for throwing his 29-year-old girlfriend in front of an oncoming train at the Fulton Street station last month. VALDEZ is charged in a New York State Supreme Court indictment with one count of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree and one count of Assault in the First Degree. [1]

“As alleged, Christian Valdez callously threw his girlfriend into an oncoming train,” said District Attorney Bragg. “His alleged vicious actions caused serious and permanent injuries, including the amputation of both of the victim’s legs. We take all acts of violence against riders very seriously, and my thoughts are with the victim as she navigates this terrible and horrifying incident.”

According to court documents and statements made on the record in court, on March 9, 2024, at approximately 10:20 a.m., VALDEZ and his girlfriend were arguing on the platform of the 2/3 train line at the Fulton Street station. As a downtown train was coming into the station, VALDEZ threw his girlfriend towards the tracks. Several eyewitnesses called 9-1-1 to report the incident. When officers arrived, they found the victim underneath the train. The victim was rushed to the hospital, where both of her legs had to be amputated. She also suffered from fractures to her ribs and a blood clot in her lungs.

VALDEZ left the station and fled to New Jersey. A few hours later, VALDEZ was arrested after returning to the City, wearing the same clothing from the incident.

Assistant D.A.s Kristin Bailey and Sarah Khan are handling the prosecution of this case, under the supervision of Assistant D.A. Robert Ferrari (Chief of Trial Bureau 40), and Executive Assistant D.A. Lisa DelPizzo (Chief of the Trial Division). Trial Preparation Assistants Moran McCall and Paige Untermann (Trial Bureau 40), Survivor Services Bureau Counselors Nakeisha Vanterpool, Brier Eckersley and Kara Wissing, and the DANY Video Unit are providing valuable assistance in this case.

D.A. Bragg thanked the NYPD, particularly Detective Richard Barcia (Manhattan Robbery Squad), as well as the detectives of Transit Division District 2, Warrants and the 1st Precinct. He also thanked the first responders of the Emergency Service Unit and FDNY, the MTA and the New York City Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.
