D.A. Bragg Announces Prison Sentence Of Anthonia Egegbara For Subway Shoving In Times Square

September 19, 2024
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, Jr., today announced the prison sentence of ANTHONIA EGEGBARA, 32, to 12 years in state prison for shoving a 42-year-old woman into an oncoming train on a subway platform in Times Square in October 2021. On August 8, 2024, EGEGBARA pleaded guilty in New York State Supreme Court to one count of Assault in the First Degree.

“Anthonia Egegbara will serve a significant state prison term for viciously shoving a woman, who was on her morning commute, into a train as it entered the station,” said District Attorney Bragg. “The assault left the victim with stiffness and pain from her injuries to this day. I hope the resolution in this case can offer the victim a sense of justice.”

According to court documents and statements made on the record in court, and as admitted in the defendant’s guilty plea, on October 4, 2021, at approximately 8:06 a.m., the 42-year-old woman was waiting on the northbound 1, 2 and 3 train platform at the Times Square – 42nd Street subway station, near West 42nd Street and 7th Avenue. As a train entered the station, EGEGBARA, who was sitting on a nearby bench, stood up, walked over to the woman, and pushed her into the train.

Witnesses called 9-1-1 and the woman was transported to the hospital, where she had to stay for several days. She suffered a broken arm, which required surgery, and experienced bleeding from the leg, as well as bleeding and bruising to the face. She also received continuing medical treatment to address lingering injuries affecting her ability to lift and grip objects.

EGEGBARA fled the station and was arrested the next day.

Assistant D.A. Andrea Kimmel handled the prosecution of this case, under the supervision of Assistant D.A.s Harrison Schweiloch and Annie Siegel (Deputy Chiefs of Trial Bureau 60), Charles Whitt (Chief of Trial Bureau 60) and Executive D.A. Lisa DelPizzo (Chief of the Trial Division). Assistant D.A. Adam Birnbaum, who previously handled the case and initial investigation, provided valuable assistance. Trial Preparation Assistant Juliette Bellinson (Trial Bureau 60) and Investigative Analyst Lucy Xing (Trial Bureau 60) also provided valuable assistance in this case.

D.A. Bragg thanked the NYPD, particularly Detective Omaida Jiminian of the Special Investigations Unit (formerly Manhattan Robbery Squad) and the police officers of Transit Division District 1.
