June 11, 2024

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg Jr. today announced the indictment of SHAQUAN CUMMINGS, 30, for slashing an 11-year-old girl in the back of the head minutes after punching a woman in the face in East Harlem in May 2024. CUMMINGS is charged in a New York State Supreme Court indictment with one count each of Attempted Assault in the First Degree, Assault in the Second Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree, Assault in the Third Degree, Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree. “As alleged, Shaquan Cummings slashed an 11-year-old child walking with her mother in the back of the head minutes after punching a woman in the face. New Yorkers deserve to feel safe when walking through Manhattan and those who jeopardize their safety will be held accountable,” said District Attorney Bragg. “I hope both victims continue to heal from these alleged assaults.”

According to court documents and statements made on the record in court, on May 10, 2024, at approximately 2:10 p.m. on East 115th Street and Park Avenue, CUMMINGS allegedly stated “b—get the f—out of my way” before punching a 43-year-old-woman in the face.

Afterward, CUMMINGS crossed the street and followed an 11-year-old girl, who was walking with her mother. CUMMINGS slashed the girl with a box cutter at approximately 2:14 p.m. causing an approximate 7-inch gash to the left side of her head right behind her ear. She was hospitalized and received multiple staples.

CUMMINGS fled to the 116th Street Subway Station where he jumped onto the subway tracks, crossed, and was apprehended by the NYPD once he left the subway station.

Assistant D.A. Christopher Charnetsky (Child Abuse Bureau) is handling the prosecution of this case under the supervision of Assistant D.A. Heather Buchanan (Chief of the Child Abuse Bureau) and Executive Assistant D.A. and Chief of the Special Victims Division Justin McNabney.

D.A. Bragg thanked the NYPD, specifically Police Officer Bryan Gray of the 25th Precinct, Police Officer Michael DeLuna of the 25th Detective Squad and Detective Anthony Ippolito of the 25th Detective Squad.
