D.A. Bragg: Man Indicted For Unprovoked Attack On Older New Yorker At Midtown Subway Station

June 9, 2025

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr., today announced the indictment of SHERLOCK ARANA, 37, for pushing a 70-year-old woman to the ground inside the East 53rd Street and Lexington Avenue subway station in May 2025. ARANA is charged in a New York State Supreme Court indictment with one count each of Assault in the Second Degree and Assault in the Third Degree. [1]

“As alleged, Sherlock Arana assaulted a complete stranger in an unprovoked attack against an older New Yorker,” said District Attorney Bragg. “New Yorkers deserve to be safe navigating our subway stations and we will not stand for this kind of harmful conduct. We treat all random acts of violence committed in Manhattan with the seriousness they deserve, and we are working closely with our law enforcement partners to seek accountability in these cases.”

According to court documents and statements made on the record in court, on May 12, 2025, at approximately 10:30 a.m., the victim was walking in the passageway at the East 53rd Street and Lexington Avenue station, going from the E train to the 6 train platform. ARANA, who was also walking in the passageway, approached the victim and pushed her to the ground, unprovoked. As the victim fell, her head hit against a nearby wall, causing pain to her head, neck and shoulder. She was eventually transported to the hospital for treatment.

ARANA fled the scene and was arrested on May 14, 2025, allegedly wearing the same clothing from the incident.

Assistant D.A. Alexander Oltarsh is handling the prosecution of this case, under the supervision of Assistant D.A. Siobhan Carty (Trial Bureau 80) and Executive D.A. Lisa DelPizzo (Chief of the Trial Division). Trial Preparation Assistant Daniel Andrew (Trial Bureau 80) is providing invaluable assistance in this case.

D.A. Bragg thanked Transit Division District 4, particularly Police Officer Jade Fogle, who arrested the defendant after recognizing him from a wanted flyer.
