D.A. Bragg: Man Indicted On Attempted Murder For Stabbing EMT

August 21, 2023

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr., today announced the indictment of RUDY GARCIA, 48, for stabbing a 25-year-old emergency medical technician at Mount Sinai Hospital West on July 19, 2023. GARCIA is charged in a New York State Supreme Court indictment with Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, Assault in the First Degree, and Assault in the Second Degree. [1]

“First responders work on the frontlines every day to serve the City of New York. As alleged, Rudy Garcia viciously attacked an EMT who was doing her job and coming to his aid,” said District Attorney Bragg. “I’m grateful for the swift action of other members of the Mount Sinai Health System and the NYPD. My thoughts are with the victim as she continues to recover and heal.”

According to court documents and statements made on the record, on July 19, 2023, at approximately 8:20 p.m., the EMT responded to a call and transported GARCIA from West 94th Street and Amsterdam Avenue to Mount Sinai West Hospital. As the ambulance pulled into the hospital’s emergency bay, GARCIA threw a gum wrapper at the EMT. When the EMT asked GARCIA to stop, he pulled a large knife out of his sock and stabbed her chest, arm, and left leg several times.

The EMT suffered significant blood loss from puncture wounds to her left side, including one to her left forearm, one to the left side of her chest and four to her left thigh. She received stitches to her chest wound and emergency surgery for her leg wounds the same day. She also suffered nerve damage to her left arm, for which she underwent multiple surgeries.

Fellow EMTs and Mount Sinai security immediately responded and held GARCIA until NYPD officers arrested him at the scene.

Assistant D.A. Lauren Breen is handling the prosecution of the case under the supervision of Assistant D.A.s Sara Sullivan (Deputy Bureau Chief of Trial Bureau 70) and David Hammer (Chief of Trial Bureau 70), and Executive Assistant D.A. Lisa DelPizzo (Chief of the Trial Division).

D.A. Bragg thanked the NYPD, in particular Detectives Thomas Donovan and Reiner Fehrenbach of the Midtown North Precinct Detective Squad. D.A. Bragg also thanked the Mount Sinai Health System.
