On Friday, a New York State Supreme Court jury found BIBI REHANA KHAN and AARON KHAN, a brother sister duo, guilty of possessing more than $50,000 in stolen goods from the Macy’s flagship store in Herald Square as part of a retail fencing operation. The defendants were each convicted of one count Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Second Degree, a class C felony.
As proven at trial, the defendants operated a perfume and cosmetics store, Rehana’s Cosmetics, that operated online and at 870 6th Avenue in Manhattan, just a few blocks from Macy’s. The store was a well-known destination to bring stolen goods, and boosters would offload products from shopping bags and rolling suitcases and leave with cash.
The defendants possessed clothing, toys, appliances, designer handbags and cosmetics stolen from Macy’s. Specific items included Coach and Michael Kors purses; Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana fragrances; Marvel and Star Wars Lego sets; coffee makers; and blenders, which they would then sell at a lower price-point.
Using “Radio-Frequency Identification” (RFID) technology, the District Attorney’s Office, working in collaboration with private investigators from Macy’s, tracked the flow of stolen goods directly from Macy’s to Rehana’s Cosmetics a few blocks away.
Statement from D.A. Bragg: “This conviction sends a strong message that in addition to prosecting retail theft at the ground level, we do not tolerate larger-scale organized fencing operations. As proven at trial, the defendants’ store was a well-known hub for stolen goods. Retail theft continues to trend downwards in Manhattan, and we will hold accountable those who create breeding grounds for this criminal activity.”
