Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr., today announced the sentencing of CHRISTIAN VALDEZ, 36, to 18 years in state prison for throwing his 29-year-old girlfriend in front of an oncoming train at the Fulton Street station in March 2024. On June 13, 2025, VALDEZ pleaded guilty in New York State Supreme Court to one count of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree.
“Christian Valdez will serve nearly two decades in prison following his conviction for committing a life-threatening act of domestic violence in our transit system,” said District Attorney Bragg. “As a result of this extremely serious attack, the victim has permanent physical injuries, and experiences emotional trauma. I hope the resolution of this case offers her some sense of justice.”
According to court documents and statements made on the record in court, and as admitted in the defendant’s guilty plea, on March 9, 2024, at approximately 10:20 a.m., VALDEZ and his girlfriend were arguing on the platform of the 2/3 train line at the Fulton Street station. As a downtown train was coming into the station, VALDEZ threw his girlfriend towards the tracks. Several eyewitnesses called 9-1-1 to report the incident. When officers arrived, they found the victim underneath the train. The victim was rushed to the hospital, where both of her legs had to be amputated. She also suffered from fractures to her ribs and a blood clot in her lungs.
VALDEZ left the station and fled to New Jersey. A few hours later, VALDEZ was arrested after returning to the City, wearing the same clothing from the incident.
Assistant D.A.s Kristin Bailey and Jeremy Hutton handled the prosecution of this case, under the supervision of Assistant D.A. Robert Ferrari (former Bureau Chief of Trial Bureau 40), Shawn McMahon (Deputy Chief of the Trial Division) and Executive D.A. Lisa DelPizzo (Chief of the Trial Division). Assistant D.A. Sarah Khan (Trial Bureau 40), Paralegal Amelia Shaw (Trial Bureau 40), Senior Investigative Analyst Anissa Weisel (Trial Bureau 40), Survivor Services Bureau Counselors Nakeisha Vanterpool, Brier Eckersley, Alena Klee, Kara Wissing, and the DANY Video and High Tech Analysis Unit all provided valuable assistance in this case.
D.A. Bragg thanked the NYPD, particularly Detective Richard Barcia (Manhattan Robbery Squad), as well as the detectives and officers of Transit Division District 2, Warrants and the 1st Precinct. He also thanked the first responders of the Emergency Service Unit and FDNY, the MTA, and the New York City Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.
