D.A. Bragg: Man Indicted For Fatally Stabbing 29-Year-Old Ex-Girlfriend Outside Her Home

June 12, 2024

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg Jr. today announced the indictment of TYQUANE JEMMOTT, 33, for fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend, 29-year-old Shirley Rodriguez, outside of her Washington Heights apartment building in May 2024. JEMMOTT is charged in a New York State Supreme Court indictment with one count of Murder in the Second Degree. [1]

“As alleged, after waiting for hours outside of Shirley Rodriguez’s home, Tyquane Jemmott sprung from behind a car the moment she stepped outside and took her life in a flurry of stab wounds,” said District Attorney Bragg. “Shirley Rodriguez was beloved by her family, including her mother, father, and sister who so tragically had to hear this young woman’s final words as she succumbed to her injuries. My thoughts are with them as they continue to grieve her loss.”

According to court documents and statements made on the record, Ms. Rodriguez broke up with JEMMOTT in early May 2024 after dating for approximately two years. The morning of May 20, 2024, JEMMOTT waited outside of Ms. Rodriguez’s Washington Heights apartment building for more than 2 hours while hiding behind cars until Ms. Rodriguez exited her building at approximately 5:35 a.m. where an Uber was waiting to take her to work. JEMMOTT jumped out from behind a parked car, ran to Ms. Rodriguez, and stabbed her multiple times before fleeing. Ms. Rodriguez was able to buzz her apartment, and when her mother, father, and sister came downstairs, she told her sister, “Ty did this to me.”

JEMMOTT was arrested by NYPD officers at a family member’s apartment building in the Bronx later that afternoon.

Assistant D.A. Shilpa Kalra (Trial Bureau 30) and Assistant D.A. Charles Manfredi, Deputy Chief of Crimes Strategies Unit, are handling the prosecution of this case under the supervision of Trial Bureau 30 Chief Erin Tierney and Deputy Chiefs Elizabeth Clerkin and Phillip Gary, and Executive Assistant D.A. Justin McNabney (Chief of the Special Victims Division). Trial Preparation Assistant Isabella Bosrock also assisted with the case.

D.A. Bragg thanked the NYPD, including Detective Luis Pagan from the 33rd Precinct Detective Squad and Detective John Scozzafava from Manhattan Homicide North.
