Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr., today announced the indictment of ABDERANMAN MAYO, 28, for assaulting a 70-year-old victim on the 145th Street A train platform. MAYO is charged in a New York State Supreme Court indictment with two counts of Assault in the Second Degree. [1]
“Nobody should have to experience this type of alleged vicious attack on the transit system,” said District Attorney Bragg. “I hope the victim will continue to recover from his injuries and urge anyone who witnessed this assault to please call 212-335-9040.”
According to court documents and statements made on the record, on March 16, 2024, at approximately 11:00p.m., MAYO approached the victim on the platform of the 145th Street A train and asked for a cigarette light. The victim refused, and MAYO walked away towards an unapprehended individual. Both individuals then allegedly went up to the victim and punched him multiple times in the face and head. They then pushed him to the ground and kicked him multiple times.
Bystanders alerted transit police in the station and MAYO was arrested at the scene.
The victim sustained bruising on his face, a cut above his eye and a bloody nose.
Anyone with additional information about the assault should call 212-335-9040.
This indictment represents the Office’s ongoing efforts to address crime on subways and buses. For example, earlier this year D.A. Bragg announced Attempted Murder charges in a slashing incident at the 50th Street Subway station and stabbing at Grand Central station; sexual abuse charges for two alleged groping incidents on the subway; and a state prison sentence for a defendant convicted of three Port Authority slashings.
