Two 18th Century paintings stolen from a Peruvian church have been returned twelve years after they were first snatched.
A 48-year-old alleged fraudster has been charged with repeatedly filing false property records claiming ownership of the New Yorker Hotel, in which he lived rent-free for five years using a housing law loophole.

A 48-year-old man was indicted for filing false real property records claiming ownership of the New Yorker Hotel between May 2019 and September 2023, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced Wednesday.
“As alleged, Mickey Barreto repeatedly and fraudulently claimed ownership of one of the City’s most iconic landmarks, the New Yorker Hotel,” said Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. “We will not tolerate manipulation of our city’s property records by those who seek to scam the system for personal gain.”
