“The defendants allegedly went to great lengths to protect a fellow officer from accountability,” said District Attorney Bragg. “This type of conduct significantly harms the public trust in law enforcement. Everyone must be treated the same under the law, regardless of their position or background.”

“This alleged behavior was incredibly dangerous, leading to injuries for one cab driver and putting the safety of many other drivers and pedestrians at risk. Furthermore, this NYPD Deputy Inspector, then a Commanding Officer, allegedly went to great lengths to cover up the incident to avoid responsibility,” said District Attorney Bragg. “We will continue to hold public servants accountable when they violate the public trust.”

“Christian Zapata is charged with repeatedly punching a victim who posed no immediate danger or physical threat. We will continue to impartially investigate instances where members of law enforcement use unnecessary force, because doing so is essential for enhancing public safety and confidence in the criminal justice system,” said District Attorney Bragg. 

“Today former Sergeant Dejesus admitted to assaulting an individual in a holding cell and never reporting the incident. Members of the NYPD work hard day and night to keep us safe, and they must make quick and difficult decisions every day. In an instance where misconduct does occur, we must follow the facts to ensure the law is upheld and help build stronger law enforcement and community relations,” said District Attorney Bragg.

“As we allege, the defendant’s assault caused the victim to suffer substantial pain. Police officers are often put in challenging situations, but they must use their training appropriately and treat the residents of New York City with respect,” said District Attorney Bragg.
