Former Metro-North Railroad contract manager James Berlangero, 64, was ordered to serve one to three years in state prison for “corrupting” the MTA’s bidding process to benefit himself and WRS Environmental Services, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said in a statement. Berlangero “misused taxpayer dollars and railroaded a contracting process that should have been decided based on free competition,” Bragg said.
“Bienvenido Liriano sought to flood our streets with dozens of dangerous weapons,” said District Attorney Bragg. “We will not allow our neighborhoods to continue to be ravaged by the proliferation of illegal guns and will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to identify and root out this activity.”
“This former Metro-North contract manager misused taxpayer dollars and railroaded a contracting process that should have been decided based on free competition,” said District Attorney Bragg.
“We are honored to return the Quarter Shekel, an exceedingly rare coin that has immense cultural value. Despite the complexity of this investigation, our team of prosecutors, analysts and agents working with Israeli authorities, were able to track down this antiquity in just a matter of months,” said District Attorney Bragg.
Earlier this year, the Israeli government enlisted the help of the Manhattan district attorney’s office to make the case that the coin was probably stolen.
