Justice was served in a Manhattan courtroom today (Wednesday) as Jayqwan Hamilton, 37, and Robert Demaio, 36, were sentenced to 40-years-to-life in prison and Jacob Barroso, 32, was sentenced to 20-years-to-life in prison for their roles in the deadly drugging and robbery scheme that targeted patrons of LGBTQ+ bars in Hell’s Kitchen — ultimately leading to the murders of Julio Ramirez and John Umberger.
“Julio Ramirez and John Umberger were beloved by their friends and family and had incredibly bright futures ahead of them,” said District Attorney Bragg. “Yet their lives were cut short by these defendants, who displayed a wanton disregard towards their victims. They left both men to die as they used their financial accounts to purchase clothes and sneakers, never once showing concern about the deadly consequences of their actions. We will never be able to undo the tragic losses of Mr. Ramirez and Mr. Umberger, but I hope these significant prison sentences can provide some closure to their loved ones.”
“We continue to recover and return antiquities that were trafficked by Robin Symes,” said District Attorney Bragg. “That is a testament to the hard work of attorneys, analysts and investigators who are committed to undoing the significant damage traffickers have caused to our worldwide cultural heritage.”
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office returned eight artifacts to Peru during a ceremony at the Peruvian consulate in New York on May 15.
