New York City landlords who make life hell for their rent-regulated tenants could spend up to seven years behind bars if a new bill co-sponsored by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg becomes law.
Assemblymember Micah Lasher stood with Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg on Thursday morning to unveil new legislation targeting landlords who harass rent-regulated tenants across multiple buildings.
“Today, Luis Gil is facing accountability for fatally stabbing 33-year-old Hugo Morales in an unprovoked attack on Pier 84. The defendant’s egregious actions abruptly cut Mr. Morales’s life short,” said District Attorney Bragg. “Mr. Morales immigrated to America with the hopes of earning enough money to eventually build his mother a house in Guatemala. My thoughts are with Mr. Morales’s loved ones as they continue to mourn his tragic loss.”
A California man has been indicted on accusations of stealing nearly $20,000 from at least five people through a fake Hell’s Kitchen apartment rental, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said Thursday.
“Nicholas Fuelling allegedly stole approximately $20,000 from at least five individuals who thought they would be moving into a Hell’s Kitchen apartment. Instead, we allege, Fuelling’s lies left people scrambling for housing, and even left one victim effectively homeless,” said District Attorney Bragg. “Scarce housing is a breeding ground for fraud, and we prosecute those who take advantage of the hopes of prospective tenants.
