A New Jersey man was sentenced Friday to 24 years to life in prison for driving drunk and crashing into a crowd of people celebrating the Fourth of July on the Lower East Side in 2024, killing four and injuring seven others, prosecutors said.

NEW YORK (PIX11) — A man who crashed into a crowd of people and killed four on July 4th has been sentenced to 24 years-to-life in prison for the drunk driving incident, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced on Friday.
“Daniel Hyden has been sentenced to 24 years-to-life in state prison for murdering four New Yorkers and severely injuring seven others as they were enjoying an annual Fourth of July barbecue. Ana Morel, Lucile Pinkney, Herman Pinkney and Emily Ruiz went to the celebration not knowing that Daniel Hyden would end their lives that day with his pickup truck,” said District Attorney Bragg. “While this prison sentence will not reverse the fatalities, injuries, and trauma, I hope this sentencing brings a measure of comfort for those who were impacted by this mass casualty event. If you are intoxicated, do not get behind the wheel – it risks the lives of others, and you will be prosecuted.”
The Manhattan district attorney is calling on state lawmakers to pass the CRYPTO Act, which would criminalize businesses exchanging, transmitting or trading cryptocurrency without a virtual currency license.
