Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and New York State Sen. Zellnor Myrie on Thursday announced a proposed law to criminalize operating a cryptocurrency business without a license, saying crypto has become an “ideal vehicle for money laundering.”
“A 47-year-old pizza manager was doing his job when Tyshaun Watson entered the restaurant and brutally assaulted him, leaving him with a lasting traumatic brain injury,” said District Attorney Bragg. “Tyshaun Watson has been sentenced to 17 years in state prison for his actions. Individuals who brutalize workers in Manhattan will face accountability.”
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced this week that 37-year-old Mitchaux Booker has been sentenced to 18 years in state prison for his role in the 2021 death of 15-year-old Jallen McConnie, a special needs teen who was staying at a relative’s Upper West Side apartment.
District Attorney Bragg said: “The shadow financial system created by the explosion of cryptocurrency has created an ideal vehicle for money laundering and other crimes in New York State. Crypto is the go-to means for bad actors to move and hide the proceeds of crime. It is long past time for businesses that operate without a virtual currency license and flout due diligence requirements to face criminal penalties. I thank Senator Myrie for his leadership on this issue and urge the legislature to take action this session.”
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said he plans to push for a nationwide crackdown on 3D-printed firearms, building on legislation he’s promoted to New York state lawmakers in recent years.
